You Can Sit With Us
Summer 2022 !!!
Picture This:
You’re sitting in your room mindlessly scrolling on Instagram. Then, you come across a post from one of your “friends” who posted a photo of her and some of your other friends together. Hanging out…without you…
Your anxiety starts to escalate, and your mind begins to overthink; “Why wasn’t I invited? Are they mad at me? Did I do something wrong? Do they not like me anymore? Are we not friends and they aren’t inviting me to hang out? Aaaahhhh!!!”
We get it. These days with social media we are much more hyperaware of what our friends are up to and constantly comparing our lives to others. Is it healthy? No! Does this increase our anxiety? Yes! What can you do about it? Keep reading…
One in four girls today will fall into a clinical diagnosis such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, and other mental/emotional disorders according to Steven Hinshaw’s “The Triple Bind”, On top of these, many will report being constantly anxious, sleep-deprived, and under significant pressure.
Anxiety-related disorders in teenagers have been on the rise for the last decade, particularly in teen girls. What’s changed in the last decade? A lot! From hyperconnectivity to technology to amplified external pressures to even being more open and aware about mental health concerns. While we know that anxiety is a normal and healthy function (*think fight or flight response) for many teens today it can be crippling and a sign that they need more support and help to cope with the stressors in their life. We know that avoidance feeds anxiety. When teens avoid a situation, they miss the opportunity to correct that perception and recognize their own strength.
So, what can WE do about all of this?
Given the statistics that 75% of teen girls with low self-esteem reported engaging in negative activities such as self-harming, bullying, smoking, drinking, or disordered eating, we know that they are not alone. Having a safe, non-judgmental space to openly discuss these issues can greatly improve one’s mental health and develop positive and healthy coping skills.
